Marlborough Wine and Food Festival 2012

Food Takes Centre Stage alongside Wine at the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival

  • Chef’s Table to be part of Festival for first time

  • International flavours combine with Marlborough Wines

With over 30 food stalls, the 2012 Marlborough Wine and Food Festival is set to be a gastronomic event.

New Zealand’s largest and longest running wine festival takes place on Saturday February 11, at the historic Brancott Estate Vineyard.

Alongside the 60 wineries and hundreds of locally produced wines, the festival will highlight the abundance of gourmet food produced in the region.

General Manager Marcus Pickens said the food stalls will represent close to a dozen international cuisines, from French to Indian, Mexican to Japanese, as well as highlighting classic New Zealand fare.

“Marlborough wines are renowned for complementing an array of food styles and we wanted to showcase that ability at this year’s festival,” he said.

An added bonus is the introduction of the Fisher and Paykel Chef’s Table, with well known celebrity chefs coming to Marlborough to demonstrate their skills.

“The cooking demonstrations will be held throughout the day, with entry being a gold coin donation,” Mr Pickens said. “Thanks to the generosity of the chefs tables food sponsors, Regal Salmon, Canter Valley and Beef and Lamb New Zealand providing food product we will be able to make a donation to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal from the Fisher and Paykel Chefs Table.”

Many of the wineries onsite will also be matching their wines with specifically created dishes. Members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite wine and food match, via text on the day.

Wine lovers will also get the chance to learn from winemaking masters, with the popular wine tutorials returning this year. Marlborough’s flagship wine Sauvignon Blanc will come under the spotlight with an Evolution class focusing on the older and more diverse styles. The other tutorial, Wild Card Reds, will highlight the red varietals emerging in Marlborough.

The jam-packed day includes entertainment from Kiwi legends Hello Sailor, plus Tahuna Breaks, Dane Rumble, Christchurch band Dukes and Marlborough boys, Remastered.

“The Marlborough Wine and Food Festival has been a part of summer for nearly 30 years,” Mr Pickens said. “2012 will be no different. We have something for everyone, no matter what age.”

Tickets for the festival are available at all Ticket Direct outlets at www.ticketdirect.co.nz or 0800 224 224.

July 2011

NZ Exporter’s Forum 13 - 15th of July

Vital to the on-going success of the New Zealand wine industry, exports are not just about packaging up some wine in a case and sending it out to the world with hopes it will sell. It is important for anyone involved in exporting to understand the market they are targeting and how to make the most of it.

The Exporter’s Forum, is considered the one stop shop for advice and information on the latest trends within the global market and the challenges involved for the wine industry. This Forum was to have been held in Christchurch, but due to the February earthquake, was transferred to Blenheim. It will be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre, from July 13 – 15.

Marlborough Environment Awards – Success for Wine Industry

The biennial Marlborough Environment Awards were announced in May. Of the six categories, four of the top prizes went to wine industry members. Picking up the Innovative and also the Supreme Award was FMR, a family owned and Marlborough based company that supplies farm and vineyard machinery. The company won the award for their development of the SprayPro R –series sprayer which has been developed to cut down on spray drift and loss.

The SprayPro R-series recaptures spray that doesn’t hit the leaves, filters it and sprays it out again. It cuts the cost of chemicals by about 30 per cent, which is good for the grower’s budget as well as the environment. While it has been used mainly in vineyards, it is also able to be adapted to work with orchard crops as well.

Habitat Enhancement Award: Wither Hills Wine wetland restoration project

There are 50 hectares of nationally significant wetlands in the middle of Wither Hills’ vineyard at Rarangi, (on the coast of Marlborough.) All staff from the company, (based in Marlborough) are involved in the on-going efforts to control invasive weeds and pests. They also spend a number of hours every year helping to replant native trees and shrubs within the wetland area. The organisers of the Marlborough Environment Awards said; “This corporate project is an excellent example of sound environmental management being good for business.”

Efficiency Award: Aura Sustainability’s carbon footprint programme

Marlborough based consultancy Aura Sustainability measures the carbon impact of a product from production to disposal. This information helps companies make improvements and can also be turned into an easy to understand rating on a wine label to help customers decide which product to buy. Aura Sustainability is working alongside the Australian Institute of wine and UK Supermarket Tesco.

Winegrowing and Horticulture Award: Te Whare Ra vineyard and winery

Anna and Jason Flowerday aim to look after the soil and vines the way their grandparents did, before the age of chemical sprays and fertilisers. They run a highly productive property using organic and biodynamic practices showing strong awareness of water and energy efficiency.

Spur pruning trials prove fruitful.

Last month we took a close look at spur pruning versus cane. Two viticulturists said while spur was better suited to Pinot Noir or some clones of Chardonnay, it possibly wasn’t the best option for Sauvignon Blanc. This month we look at an Awatere vineyard that has had great success with spur pruned savvy.
