Wine-d up and wine down in Aotearoa
Behind Winery Doors is an essential compendium for wine lovers; a road map to the vines, the soil and the inspiring lives of vintners who have made their dreams come true establishing some of the finest wineries in New Zealand.
Featuring 45 wineries in Blenheim and Nelson, it is the ultimate travelling companion for a tour of the region; an area credited for jump-starting New Zealand’s wine industry back in the ‘70s and today hailed as producing the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world.
Created by Geoff Dale (ex-NZ Herald photographer and author of Press Pass), it literally opens Aotearoa’s winery doors and invites us in.
The award-winning photographer was inspired by his daughter’s passion for wine and career as a vintner to conceive, research and create this unique account of the best the region can offer.
Behind Winery Doors, which is to be the first of a series, is a smorgasbord: a unique collection of memorabilia, anecdotes, sketches and photographs detailing each winery’s history. Through each winery door we get a behind the scenes account of how the owners and winemakers chose their labels and logos and it highlights the best of what they produce.
It also includes practical tips for the wine tourist: what you will find at their cellar doors, what you can taste, where you can dine and the location and hours open to the public. It is a tribute to the people who have created this unique wine region in New Zealand and the international success their wines have garnered.
Co-author, Renee Dale, was the first female contender to be selected for the Romeo Bragato Exchange Scholarship between E.I.T, Hawkes Bay, and Scuola di Viticultura ed Enologia di Conegliano in Italy. She completed her degree in wine science as the valedictorian of 2007 and has since been working in wine regions throughout the world including Hawkes Bay, Waiheke, the Napa and Yarra Valley. While working on her third vintage in Napa Valley, Renee had a hand in blending a wine that was requested for the Obamas in the White House. Working as a winemaker in her home city of Auckland with Wineworks, Renee recently dispatched her first vintage under contract to an exclusive UK distributor. This led her to set up her own label, Moi Wines, which was launched last month.
Geoff Dale has produced a collection of posters featuring the winery doors of New Zealand’s vineyards in the six main wine producing regions since 2009. The success of the posters worldwide, and the treasure trove of material Geoff collected during these photographic journeys, inspired him to showcase New Zealand’s wineries in a series of books.
